Kenya: the wild still sets the pace in the Maasai Mara

From the first morning out of camp, the Maasai Mara ran on its own clock. Golden grassland to the horizon, elephants crossing the track at their own speed, and the Big Five living exactly as they did before any of us arrived.

What stayed with me was not only the wildlife but the Maasai themselves: proud, warm and unhurried. Kenya's raw beauty and the humility of its people left a deeper mark on me than any city skyline has.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the travels

How many countries has Rajiv K Poddar visited?

He has travelled to 30+ countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas and Oceania. Each diary on this page covers one destination and the single lesson it left behind.

What are the travel diaries?

They are short first-person pieces written after each trip — what he saw, who he met and what it changed about the way he works. They are deliberately about people rather than itineraries.

Which destination stands out most?

Japan, for the way ordinary work is treated as a craft. That idea shows up repeatedly in how the businesses are run.

Does he travel for business or for pleasure?

Both, and usually in the same trip. Global partnerships take him to a country; curiosity keeps him there an extra two days.

How often are new diaries published?

A new diary is published after each significant trip, roughly once a month.
